The USPEH Slovenian Chorus evolved from the U.S.P.E.H.
Organization in 1979. It was at a fund-raising dinner dance for the
U.S.P.E.H. Organization that an idea materialized have Slovene Folk songs
performed as part of the evening's entertainment. Because the performance
was so well received, a permanent choral group named PEVSKI ZBOR - USPEH
(USPEH Slovenian Chorus) was formed. In the Fall of 1979 Professor Leo C.
Muskatec from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Peck School of Fine
Arts, agreed to teach and direct the group on a weekly basis. The Chorus
has been privileged to sing under the direction of Dolores Ivanchich, Peter
Dennee, Ken McMonagle, and since 1994 Mary Bregant.
In 1982, the Chorus received a Bronze third place award at the Johnny Mann
Great America Choral Festival held in Milwaukee. In the same year, the
Chorus performed in Chicago at the 54th annual concert of the "Preseren"
Slovene Singing Society.
In the summer of 1984, the Chorus presented eight concert performances in
Slovenia at the invitation of the Slovene Emigrant Association. In the
fall of that year, the Chorus sponsored a concert given by a visiting
Slovene Octet touring the United States and Canada.
One of the Chorus' proudest moments occurred on April 18, 1987 when it
performed along with the Fourth United Stated Army Band at the AMVETS
Memorial Carillon Dedication Ceremony at the Wood National Cemetery in
Milwaukee.
During the first week of July 1990, the Chorus fulfilled another invitation
to sing in Slovenia. Since groups of descendants of Slovenes are
invited from around the world, it was a special honor to be invited a second
time.
The Chorus hosted the Dr. Bogdan Derc Chorus of the University Pediatric
Hospital, the Deseti Brat Oktet, the Trio Veseljaki of Slovenia and also
Eddie Kenik of Cleveland, Ohio.
In July of 1995, after the Chorus completed its third Slovenia concert tour,
the Slovenian Embassy invited the Chorus to perform at the opening
ceremonies of the Octave Aerospace Museum at Chanute Field,
Rantoul, Illinois. At the event, the Ambassador of Slovenia presented the
United States with artifacts of World War II.
Other memorable performances include: Participation in the Annual Rose
Festival at Whitnall Park's Botanical Gardens; the Vinska Trgatev (Wine
Festival) in Cleveland, Ohio; Sang at Iron World Discovery Center in
Chisholm, Minnesota; Sang for the Opening of the 2006 Olympic Wheel Chair
Games at Wood, Wisconsin; and July 20, 2008 at Triglav Park sang
for Reverend Joseph Gole, honoring his 65th Ordination Anniversary.
The word "USPEH" translates to "success" in English. The USPEH Slovenian
Chorus looks forward to many more years of singing enjoyment and success.
